Types of weather decisions

In the event of inclement weather, Nelson County schools has four classifications of weather decisions

  • PK-12 - NO SCHOOL, NO CHILDCARE —Students will not attend school.

    • A make-up day will be determined by the NCS Board of Education
  • PK-12 DISTANCE LEARNING, NO CHILDCARE. — Students will not attend school, but will complete assigned NTI work from home. NTI plans will be posted on schools' online home bases.

    • NTI Days are considered regular educational school days and are not made-up. Students are expected to engage and participate in their school work on NTI days.
  • All start times will be moved back two hours.
    Buses will arrive two hours later than regularly scheduled arrival. 

    • NO morning PK or Start Strong.
    • NO morning childcare.
  • All start times will be moved back one hour.
    Buses will arrive one hour later than regularly scheduled arrival. 

    • NO morning childcare.
  • In rare occasions, unexpected weather patterns develop during the school day that necessitate students be sent home prior to regularly scheduled dismissal times. Communications will be shared in the same manner as all other weather-related events. 

     

    • NO afternoon childcare.

Weather Decision Notifications

  • Weather decisions and notifications will be sent as text messages and phone calls to the contacts listed in Infinite Campus for each student.

  • Weather decisions will be posted on the NCS District website.

  • Weather decisions will be posted to the District Facebook page 

  • Weather decisions will be shared with local and regional media. They will distribute on their platforms using their established methods.

NTI Days Scenarios

NTI Days typically occur following a weather event that creates one of following scenarios

  1. When main roads are observed to be safe and accessible to staff members, yet some back roads may not be deemed safe for all buses to transport students to school. 
  2. Following extreme snow events allowing for school facilities, parking lots and transportation operations to become fully operational. 
  3. During the context of a prolonged weather event, creating numerous school cancellations, and it is deemed essential to continue learning for students.
