Construction is proceeding on schedule for the new Thomas Nelson High School. Nelson County School District will open this second high school for the 2012-13 school year. TNHS is under construction on a 122-acre campus just off Highway 245, west of U.S. 31E. Construction is expected to be complete in spring of 2012. Designed by Studio Kremer Architects, Louisville, the new high school is already garnering accolades for the many attractive and energy efficient green concepts incorporated into the design.
The building has been designed to use as much natural day lighting as possible and will be heated and cooled by a geothermal system. High, clearstory windows will allow in large amounts of natural light in many rooms, reducing the need for electric lighting. The geothermal system will make use of stable underground temperatures to provide a steady and cost-effective source for year-round temperature control in the school building. Provision has also been made for the campus to provide its own water source through use of a deepened and enlarged existing lake to irrigate athletic fields and the school grounds.
